Disconnect Wallet vs Revoke Approval: What Changes and What Remains

Disconnecting a wallet from a website does not automatically cancel an existing on-chain token allowance. Ending the connection and revoking a token approval are separate actions.

This explanation focuses on EVM token allowances, such as ERC-20 approvals. It is not a universal permission-removal procedure for every blockchain, wallet or signed message.

Two permissions, two questions

A website connection allows interaction between a site and your wallet. A token allowance gives a particular spender permission to transfer a particular token within the allowance's terms.

MetaMask's official explanation distinguishes disconnecting a site from revoking an allowance. Its guidance also notes that on-chain revocation requires a transaction and a network fee.

The ethereum.org permission guide explains checking the correct network and reviewing the contracts with access. An Ethereum allowance and a permission on another network are not one combined record.

A hypothetical allowance example

Suppose Address A approves Contract B to spend up to 100 units of Token C on Network D. Address A then disconnects the website that originally requested the approval.

The connection can disappear from the wallet's site list while the Token C allowance for Contract B remains. Reopening the site is not the test of whether the allowance exists; the relevant on-chain record is.

If the user submits a valid transaction reducing that allowance to zero and it confirms, the specified allowance has changed. That does not retroactively undo a transfer, cancel every other permission or establish that the private key is secure.

A review checklist that keeps the scope visible

First identify the network, owner address, token and spender. Use the wallet provider's official documentation to reach an appropriate review tool; do not use a link sent by an unsolicited support account.

Next distinguish reading the record from submitting a transaction. Looking up a public address can show information; changing an allowance requires an authorized action. Review the network and requested operation before approving it.

Finally check the confirmed result. A submitted or pending transaction is not the same as a completed revocation. Save the transaction reference and review the specific permission again.

When revoking an allowance is not the whole answer

If recovery information or a private key was exposed, one allowance change does not resolve that wider compromise. Use the wallet provider's official incident guidance rather than assuming a clean approval list proves the wallet is safe.

Some signed authorizations also require different analysis from a conventional token allowance. An approval checker should not be described as finding or cancelling every possible signature.

Never share recovery information to obtain an allowance review. A discussion group can explain terminology; it is not a wallet-support authority and cannot reverse confirmed transfers.

The useful record is specific: which permission existed, on which network, what action changed it and whether that action confirmed. “I disconnected” does not provide all four answers.
