How to Check a Crypto Exchange’s US Registration and License Claims
To check a crypto exchange's US registration or license claims, identify the legal entity and the service offered, then verify the relevant record through an official register. A logo, certificate image or matching brand name is not enough.
This guide concerns US-facing claims. It does not determine whether a particular company is authorized to serve you, and it should not be applied unchanged to another country.
Record the entity before searching
Start with the legal company named in the terms governing your account. Record its exact name, the product you use, your state and the registration or license number being claimed.
Keep the website domain beside that information. A business can operate several brands; an impersonator can also copy a real company's name. A matching name is the beginning of verification, not the end.
Choose a register that matches the claim
The CFTC's registration guide distinguishes derivatives intermediaries from cash or spot-market services. It directs readers to NFA BASIC for relevant derivatives registrations and to FinCEN and state resources for applicable checks.
Use the FinCEN MSB search entry point for an MSB claim. A FinCEN registration is not government approval or endorsement of the business. State licensing and permission to provide a specific product are separate questions.
If a company advertises a registration that does not cover the service you are considering, do not treat the unrelated record as an answer. Ask for the exact entity, authority and scope, then verify independently.
Compare the record with the service you reached
Create a short evidence record:
- Exact legal name and claimed registration number.
- Official register URL and the date checked.
- Status and service scope shown by that register.
- Domain and contact information, where the official source provides them.
- Differences that still require clarification.
For an illustrative case, suppose an exchange advertises Company A's registration, while its customer agreement names Company B. Do not silently assume those entities have the same permissions. The mismatch is a question to resolve before relying on the claim.

No result is not a complete legal conclusion
A failed search may reflect an incorrect name, the wrong register, a different product category or a relevant exemption. CFTC guidance notes that some firms may be exempt or outside its regulation. That is why the product and jurisdiction must stay in the record.
At the same time, a company's refusal to clarify a claimed registration leaves the claim unverified. Preserve that distinction rather than writing either “definitely illegal” or “definitely safe” without evidence.
A valid record does not answer every risk question
Registration does not establish that an investment will be profitable, that withdrawals will always work or that an account cannot be compromised. Evaluate custody, fees, withdrawal terms and support access separately.
The practical goal is a reproducible check: another reader should be able to follow the official source, identify the same entity and see what the record actually says. A badge on a marketing page cannot replace that process.
